Times Square, the crossroads of the world, has lost its Times. The New York Times - the 'Old Grey Lady' - unbearably smug but probably still the best, has moved out of its block-long building at 43rd Street.

The newsroom, the heart of a newspaper (whatever media moguls may wish), wrote Sunday's edition, popped a champagne cork and then threw its collective hat, keyboard and coffee cup into packing cases.

Publisher Arthur 'Pinch' Sulzberger Jnr (his father was 'Punch') blurted out this year that the Times may not even exist in five years, at least not on paper. Already more people read it online than in ink.
