Wilson Dube is a dignified 42-year-old villager, an opposition MDC councillor in his district in Matabeleland, much respected. But now he howls with pain as I help him to his feet. His fractured arm has slipped out of its sling, and, carefully, we tuck it back.

We are in his thatched hut in the village. He wants to talk, but it is hard. He is bruised all over his body. There are three deep cuts in his shaven scalp. But the first thing he wants to say is, he is grateful to God for his survival. Two of his friends are dead.

Then he tells me that an armed group from the Central Intelligence Organisation, Mugabe's secret police, picked him and four others up last week, dragging them away from their work in the fields, and driving them to an isolated hill
