A mouthwatering summer of choice

Summer in London is inconceivable without a great ballet company installed in a grand theatre with opulent productions and extortionate ticket prices, but rarely has there been such mouthwatering choice as there is this year.

Italy and Russia jostle for your attention: Milan's La Scala is at Covent Garden with Nureyev's luxurious production of The Sleeping Beauty, followed by Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet at the Coliseum, which offers delicious nights out with pirates (Le Corsaire), Spanish hairdressers (Don Quixote), Roman slaves (Spartacus - starring Carlos Acosta) and Soviet collective farm workers (The Bright Stream - much more fun than you might think).

It's possible to get into these shows without spending a month's salary. But even if you do end up spending a packet, it's most certainly worth it.
