I've long understood the importance of indoctrinating our son with my own tastes, to ensure that for a few precious years we share at least some cultural reference points. I sang early Springsteen to him in utero, ensured his first full-length film was respectable (Toy Story) and stimulated him with worthy books (Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends). Recently, however, he's started to show an interest in the machines under the television. With the over-compensatory apprehension that only adults who write about tech-culture know, I accepted that it might be time for his first video game.
