When New York's most celebrated young ballet choreographer announced this year that he was leaving the New York City Ballet to start his own company, the reaction was a mixture of excitement and incredulity. No job is more prestigious than the one at the NYCB, and history is littered with failed stellar troupes. But Christopher Wheeldon, Royal Ballet-trained and Somerset-born, unites British emotionalism and precision with American daring and visual flair. No wonder the world's greatest dancers have been delightedly mucking in to help launch his company, Morphoses. With guests such as Covent Garden's Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg as well as the astounding Angel Corella, and Wendy Whelan from New York, this company should give Wheeldon's lovely choreography a wondrous launch - the rest is up to him and his accountants.
