You could say that Katherine Aertebjerg's work is related stylistically to the fairy stories of Nordic folklore and their book illustrations, especially those with female protagonists. And you'd be right. The prize-winning artist is from Denmark, whose most famous author is Hans Christian Andersen.
But Aertebjerg's highly coloured, fecund minglings of animals and humans are also reminiscent of deities from the Hindu pantheon - a successful combination of sensitive, introverted northern melancholy with the outgoing spirituality of India. Which, with some crazy cartoon humour and comic book excess thrown in, all makes for a truly fantastic, highly enjoyable delirium. Neal Brown
