Sopranos take their final bow at the Emmys

Creator David Chase wins the night’s biggest prize, reports christopher goodwin in LA

We had to wait until the very end of the evening but the last Emmy handed out last night in Hollywood, for best drama series was a fitting tribute to the TV show that many believe changed the face of American television: The Sopranos for its sixth and final season.

In a moving tribute, the entire cast and creative team behind The Sopranos crowded onto the stage of the Shrine Auditorium after the show's creator David Chase accepted the award. Chase also won the Emmy - TV's Oscar - for best writing for a drama, for the episode Made In America. The Sopranos also won best director for Alan Taylor.

"I don’t think we've had that much of an impact," said Chase modestly, when asked backstage how he thought his show had changed television.

actor and best actress categories. James Gandolfini had been nominated but the Emmy went to James Spader, who plays lawyer Alan Shore in the series Boston Legal. "I feel like I just stole a pile of money from the mob," said Spader sheepishly after the win. Edie Falco, who played Tony Soprano's wife Carmela, lost to veteran Sally Field, who plays Nora Walker in the new series Brothers & Sisters.

America Ferrera, who stars as Betty Suarez in Ugly Betty, was a popular winner as best actress in a comedy series winner, while Ricky Gervais, playing Andy Millman in Extras, won best actor in a comedy series. Bizarrely, Gervais and Stephant Merchant were beaten for an Emmy for best writing for a comedy - for Extras - by an episode of the American version of The Office.

To no one’s surprise another ground-breaking series also in its final season, Prime Suspect: The Final Act, won best mini-series, with Helen Mirren taking best actress in that category.
