Fred flunks it for the Republicans

Hillary is laughing all the way to the White House as the Right splits, says charles laurence

The Grand Old Party of the Republicans appears to be heading for a train wreck in the 2008 presidential election.

Hillary Clinton has all but mopped up the Democrat primaries which begin in January, leading rival Barack Obama by as much as 20 points in the national polls. She is even raising record sums of campaign money. That gives her a head of steam which makes her look invincible - not just in the primaries but, given America's anger with President Bush's Republican neo-cons, in next November's general election too.

The same primary process, however, is de-railing the GOP. Rudy Giuliani, hero of 9/11, looks like their winner, leading all summer and now brushing aside Fred Thompson (right), the actor who, as a new Ronald Reagan, was meant to save the party.

As the star of Law and Order, Thompson had a recognition factor rivalling Hillary's; he
