The irony in the title of Dawn Roscoe's
Exquisite Suburbia is almost palpable. The series is, after all, a resolute dig at the
Stepford Wives ethos of living a manicured but stultifying life of domestic bliss: "Along with preserving the perfect family," Roscoe says, "modern women are also required to remain ageless, young and forever beautiful." Her images show one such woman trying to do what's required, as twee craft sessions with her daughter give way to drinking in the afternoons. And all the while her flawless visage never slips - glazed, vacant and mannequin-like.
