Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis Francois d'Arlandes made the first manned flight in a hot air balloon. Taking off from the Bois de Boulogne outside Paris and landing 9km away on the Butte-aux-Cailles, the pair achieve an altitude of 3,000ft.
