This film version of a best-selling German novel stars Kate Winslet as Hanna Schmitz, a former concentration camp guard who shows no remorse for the part she played in the Holocaust. David Cross plays Michael Berg, the schoolboy seduced by Winslet before discovering her history of war crimes. Ralph Fiennes plays the older Berg who later in life teaches his former lover, now jailed for life, how to read - hence the title.
