Honeymoon killing: six held on Antigua
Six people are being held for questioning by police in Antigua over the murder of a bride on her honeymoon, and the wounding of her husband. Doctor Catherine Mullany died when she was shot in the head by a gunman who entered the couple's cabin at a luxury hotel. Her physiotherapist husband Benjamin is critically ill after he was shot in the neck. The shootings were thought to have been part of a bungled robbery.
The couple, both 31 and from Swansea, were married on July 12, and were on the last day of their honeymoon when the incident took place. It is thought the attackers battered down the door of their bedroom at 5am, waking them, and the shooting took place after a confrontation.
Dr Mullany, nee Bowen, was a hospital doctor at a children's unit in Wales, and was training to be a GP. The couple's families released a joint statement saying: "We are deeply shocked and devastated at the recent events in Antigua and are struggling to comprehend what has happened to Ben and Catherine. We appreciate the support of our family and friends."
