Karadzic flies out as Belgrade riots

Radovan Karadzic, former leader of the Bosnian Serbs, has been extradited to The Hague to face charges of genocide. He was flown to Rotterdam airport just hours after a rally attended by 10,000 supporters in Belgrade turned into a riot. More than 40 people, most of them police officers, were injured when the crowd attacked with fireworks, flares and rocks.

Karadzic was met at Rotterdam by helicopters and cars which transfered him to the International Criminal Tribunal into the Bosnian war. He will make an initial appearance to enter a plea within the next few days, and intends to be clean-shaven, having removed the large beard he sported as a disguise while living on the run for 13 years.

Karadzic's brother Luka and nephew Dragan said they had bought things for him to take to The Hague. His list of wants included new suits, shirts, ties, shoes, vitamins, and numerous books, including Shakespeare's Sonnets, Dostoyevsky's Brothers Karamazov, Latin Quotes, and books by Serb authors.
