Bank holds interest rate steady

The Bank of England decided to hold interest rates at five per cent today, despite widespread fears that the UK economy is going into recession. The Bank's Monetary Policy Committee is struggling to balance the threats of accelerating inflation and decelerating growth.

Last month, the majority of MPC members supported a hold, but there was one vote for a cut and another for an increase.
