UK protesters released in Beijing

Two Britons arrested in China for unveiling pro-Tibet banners as the Olympic torch made its final journey across the city have been released and are awaiting deportation. Iain Thom, 24 from Edinburgh and Lucy Fairbrother, 23, from London climbed lampposts to demonstrate against China's presence in Tibet.

Now their families report that a blog written by Fairbrother in 2005 has been clumsily altered to incorporate pro-Chinese sentiments in awkward English, wildly at odds with her real views, including: "I admit that I have been under much influence of militant Free Tibet organisations back home. What China is doing now, and what China HAS done, are so different, and I am angry with myself for not realising the distinction before now."

Activist Lhadon Tethong of Students for a Free Tibet said she would assume the blog had been altered after Fairbrother's arrest: "It is something that we are pretty used to. I am just surprised that they didn't take it down instead of trying to misrepresent her views."
