Eight missing in French Alps

Eight climbers are missing after a giant avalanche hit the French Alps early on Sunday morning. Exhausted rescue workers suspended their search last night after finding eight survivors buried in snow. However they were forced to abandon the rescue mission amid fears that a second avalanche could strike during the afternoon.

According to French police, at least two groups of climbers were hit by the 200m-long wall of snow on Mont Blanc du Tacul.

There have been more than 100 deaths in the Alps of France, Italy and Switzerland this summer.
