Thai protesters besiege PM’s offices
A large crowd of anti-government protesters in Bangkok have broken into the offices of Thailand's prime minister, demanding that Samak Sundaravej and his cabinet resign. It was one of a series of demonstrations by the right-wing People's Alliance for Democracy, when thousands took to the streets of Bangkok and took over the state broadcaster NBT's headquarters and surrounded the main government offices.
While today's demonstrations have reportedly been peaceful, the People's Alliance - which led months of demonstrations that ended in the ousting of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in September 2006 - is trying to bring down Thailand's elected government in a self-described "final showdown".
The group contends that Samak Sundaravej is simply a proxy for Thaksin, who is wanted for alleged corruption and is now in self-imposed exile.
