Johnson looks at Met race inquiry

Boris Johnson is considering an inquiry into concerns over racism in the Metropolitan Police after allegations made by the Metropolitan Black Police Association. Members of the Met BPA are planning a recruitment boycott which aims to discourage black and Asian potential recruits from applying to the force.

They say the BPA would "be failing in its duty" not to tell them of the "hostile and racist situation there" and are considering advertising in newspapers as part of the campaign.

Johnson, who will attend his first meeting as chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority today, has been considering an investigation into race and the Met for some time. Last week he ousted the Met's commissioner Sir Ian Blair after a series of controversies. Blair suspended assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur after he began to sue the force for racism and denounced Blair as a racist.
