Bin Laden ‘isolated’ from Al Qaeda
The CIA believes Osama bin Laden has become "isolated" from the day-to-day operation of Al Qaeda, but his capture is still the top priority of the US security forces.
The American intelligence body's director Michael Hayden said it was thought that the Saudi militant, believed to be behind the 9/11 attacks, was hiding in a tribal area of north-west Pakistan.
He said that bin Laden was "putting a lot of energy into his own survival" as the terror organisation grew in other regions, in particular in Africa and the Middle East.
In a speech to the Atlantic Council, Hayden said the CIA was making progress in curbing Al Qaeda's activities in the Philippines, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, however in countries including Somalia, Yemen, Pakistan and Algeria - where Al Qaeda has joined forces with other militant groups - there was an increase in activity.
