First alien planet photographed

The Hubble Space Telescope has taken the first photograph of a planet outside of our own solar system. The alien planet, around the same size as Jupiter, appears as a tiny red dot in the middle of a giant dust ring.
The planet, which has been named Fomalhaut b, orbits the star Fomalhaut and is around 25 light years from Earth. Fomalhaut b is 11bn miles away from its star and one orbit takes around 870 years.
Astronomers believe studying the planet and its star will provide insights into how our own solar system would have looked a 100m years ago.
Advances in optics and image processing have allowed astronomers to effectively subtract the bright light from stars, which usually drowns out planets, leaving behind light from the planets.
The image of Fomalhaut b is the culmination of more than eight years of work to find a planet orbiting Fomalhaut after scientists first began to suspect the star could have planets surrounding it.
