Speeding: ‘two strikes’ ban proposal

Drivers caught breaking the speed limit by a certain margin twice could face an automatic ban under new Government plans. A consultation paper on road safety suggests increasing the number of penalty points speeding drivers receive for offences where the speed limit is broken by a particularly large margin.

Under current laws, most speeding drivers receive three points. The new plan would give six points to drivers caught travelling at more than 50mph in a 30mph zone, 70mph in a 50mph zone or 90mph on a motorway or duel carriageway. At present, 12 points means an automatic ban.

The proposals also mean drivers who only break the speed limit by a few miles per hour might only receive two penalty points - at present they also receive three.

And the document also suggests creating formal drug-driving limits to make prosecutions of drivers who are found to have taken illegal drugs easier.
