Thai protestors close second airport

Demonstrators in Thailand have forced the closure of a second airport, while continuing to occupy the country's main international airport at the climax of months anti-government protests, stranding thousands of tourists.

Bangkok's second airport, Don Mueang, had to be closed after protestors stormed the terminal to prevent officials flying to meet prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, whose plane was diverted to the north of the country yesterday after the protestors took over Suvarnabhumi airport.

Yesterday, Somchai resisted a call to stand down and dissolve his government which was made by the head of Thailand's powerful army. He told Thais in a TV address that his government is legitimate and he will continue to work for the country.

General Anupong Paochinda had asked the Thai government to dissolve parliament to resolve the current political crisis, sparking speculation that another military coup was imminent.
