Cabinet to meet today in Leeds

Gordon Brown will convene his Cabinet to meet in Leeds today, only the second time it has met outside London since 1921. Ministers will tour the city, meeting local businesspeople, before holding a full cabinet meeting.

On the agenda will be the pre-Budget report and events in the Congo. Foreign Secretary David Miliband is expected to brief his Cabinet colleagues on the situation in Mumbai, where terror attacks have killed at least 120.

The Cabinet includes three West Yorkshire MPs: Environment Secretary Hilary Benn, Schools Secretary Ed Balls and Chief Secretary to the Treasury Yvette Cooper.

In 1921, David Lloyd George brought his Cabinet together in Inverness, where he was spending his holidays, to discuss Ireland's renunciation of the British king. In September this year, the Cabinet met in Birmingham.
