Canoeist admits fraud charge

John Darwin, who faked his death in a canoe accident, was told to expect a lengthy jail term yesterday after he pleaded guilty to fraud charges. He staged his disappearance at sea in 2002 to trigger life insurance and pension payments after getting into substantial debt. He will be sentenced after his wife - who has pleaded not guilty - stands trial in July.
