Credit crunch bites labour market

Unemployment rose in April for the third month in a row, in a sign that the credit crunch and slowing economy are starting to affect the labour market. Figures from the Office for National Statistics showed joblessness rose 14,000 in the first three months of the year to 1.61m.

Barclays loses another £1bn

Barclays has admitted that its investment banking and trading arm ran up a loss of £1bn in the first quarter after writing down the value of credit investments as a result of the credit crisis. The hits come on top of the £1.6bn charge the Bank took last year.
