In brief: Freud talks of rift with brother

Lucian Freud (pictured) has laid bare the extent of his rift with his younger brother by disclosing that he rejected a knighthood because Sir Clement, the broadcaster and former Liberal MP, had already been awarded the honour. "I was offered a knighthood, but turned it down. My younger brother has one of those. That's all that needs to be said on the matter" ... Guy Ritchie's mother, Lady Amber Leighton, has denied that her son and daughter-in-law, the singer Madonna, are seeking a divorce. She said: "There's no conversation about divorce because there is no divorce."... In an interview in the weekend Financial Times, Michael Palin told of the sacrafices his father, who worked as an engineer in a steel mill, had made to send him to public school. "I didn’t realise until he died quite how little [money] he had. He put about a third of his salary, about £500 a year, into educating me at Shrewsbury."...The Queen is attempting to buy a £10m private jet; the Gulfstream or Learjet, which would be paid for by the Government, has already been dubbed 'Heir Force One' by Republican critics... If only the Queen could claim kinship with the King of Bafokeng, monarch of the small South African kingdom of the same name. He negotiated shares in a mining concession in his country, which is now said to be worth $5bn... Nick and Christian Candy, the young, London-based property magnates, attract bemusement in America, mainly because of the name of their company, Candy & Candy. Nick Candy told an interviewer: "They ask if we have had our name changed – they can't place it, some think we own a sweet shop. Others think we're in pornography."...
