Madonna gives Guy Ritchie’s new movie support on the red carpet

Despite the ongoing speculation about the state of their marriage, Madonna made a point of being by her husband Guy Ritchie's side at the London premiere of his latest movie RocknRolla last night. However, it left many wondering how desperate is Ritchie's career trajectory if he needs to call on his wife's support – she is currently on a world tour and due to play in Amsterdam this evening – to help him whip up a sliver of interest in the film.

The film, a cockney gangster caper with plenty of laddish jokes, is a return to the formula that first brought Ritchie to public attention with his debut movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. But despite his wife's appearance on the red carpet, the omens do not look good.

Reviews have been mixed and, as reported on The First Post yesterday, Alan Horn, president of Warner Bros, has said he doesn't believe the film is commercial and annopunced that its release in the US would be restricted. It appears that the film's producer, Joel Silver, whose credits include The Matrix and Lethal Weapon, appears to have lost his golden touch. He was reported to be hawking the film around rival studios in the hope of finding a champion prepared to give it more fulsome backing.

For all that, Ritchie remains upbeat – even planning to turn RocknRolla into a trilogy. "If people go and see this and like it, I’ll make the second one straight away," he told reporters, adding: "It’s the kind of film I like. I’ve made a film for me."
