Clive Anderson in cheating row

Clive Anderson (pictured), the broadcaster and comic, has aroused the ire of a gaggle of journalists and social do-gooders by questioning the legitimacy of their victory in a charity quiz. Anderson had acted as chairman at the event, a fund-raiser for the Rehabilitation of Addictive Prisoners Trust held at Hammersmith Town Hall on Monday night. But after the results were announced he expressed surprise that the winning team, which included Sloane Ranger co-author Peter York and the Queen's cousin Lady Elizabeth Anson, had managed to get every single question correct. Commenting on this, he said: "It's a bit suspicious, frankly."

His opinion of proceedings is shared by Louise Guinness, a member of the brewing dynasty. "It was absolutely outrageous," she says. "It was quite blatant. No one could possibly have known all those things. They must have had inside information." Her daughter Molly, 23, concurred: "It made me feel quite sick. I just couldn't believe it. The whole point of rehabilitating addicts is to be honest with oneself."

Needless to say, journalist Sally Clarke, who captained the winning side, called HMP Lincoln, is disgusted by the accusations. "This is an appalling defamation. There is absolutely no truth in it. All my team are honest and above reproach. I've never been anywhere near the RAPT offices and neither have any of my team. It's true that I train my team to a high standard."
