Lewis Hamilton should live in Britain, says Stirling Moss
While Lewis Hamilton (pictured with his father, Anthony, and girlfriend, Pussycat Doll singer Nicole Scherzinger) revels in becoming the youngest driver ever to win the Formula One World championship, veteran driver Stirling Moss believes that he should now quit living as a tax exile in Monaco and return to England. Moss, 79, who is described as the "greatest driver never to have won the world championship", believes that the legion of sponsorship deals that the 23-year-old will receive – it is believed his earnings will now top £100 million a year and might even make him the first ever billionaire sportsman – means that he can easily afford to live in Britain.
Says Moss in the Daily Mail: "I don't agree with him living abroad as a tax exile. Of course, having to pay £20 million to £30 million in tax is a lot of money, but it's not going to dent his income that badly. He can afford it. After all, he's British and this is his home and it would be such a shame if he were to live abroad permanently."
That said, Moss has nothing but praise for Hamilton who won the championship after a nail-biting finish to the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, when he needed to finish fifth and only made it in the final metres of the last lap. "He takes pride in everything he does, he's dignified, treats people well and says the right things, in the right way. Even the way he dresses - he never comes out in a dirty shirt or jeans with holes in them. As far as I can tell, he's just the same as he was when he started: very level-headed and someone who doesn't seem to take his talent for granted. My biggest hope is that he remains this way."
