Why did Jenkins reveal her drug-taking?

Many were surprised when Katherine Jenkins (pictured), the comely Welsh opera star, decided to reveal at the weekend that she had used the Class A drugs ecstacy and cocaine. It wasn't so much the fact that she had done so, as why, apropos nothing, she suddenly decided to come clean. According to Piers Morgan, who broke the story in the Mail on Sunday, it was down to an interview with he had done with Jenkins two months ago for GQ magazine, in which she denied ever taking drugs. Apparently, this deception had been giving her "sleepless nights" and so she called Morgan and asked what she should do. His answer - let me write about it.

However, public relations guru Max Clifford offers a different story, claiming that it was because someone was already in negotiations with a "London-based tabloid" to spill the beans. Says Clifford: "Her people got wind that this story was coming out – I know because I was involved with it and I've been aware of it," he says. "I have said any number of times that if you know something is coming out, do it yourself and that way you control it by saying, 'I wish I hadn't made that mistake, nobody should take drugs'."
