Laura Bush’s memoirs in demand
US publishers do not seem to be interested in the memoirs of the outgoing American President George W Bush. His wife Laura, however, is said to be inundated with lucrative offers. According to the New York Post, the First Lady is currently in the process of finalising a multimillion-dollar deal to tell of her eight years at the White House.
One literary agent, Mort Janklow, of Janklow and Nesbit Associates, explains why: "The wives of presidents generally write books that have a greater public interest. Wives usually write from a personal point of view - instead of talking about government policy, they talk about when the dog came to the White House and had to be paper-trained. Husbands usually try to rewrite history."
Laura is said to have actually interviewed publishers rather than the other way around. Asked how long the President should wait before producing a memoir, Janklow said: "Thirty or 40 years might be good."
