Cleese and Manuel mark the Prince of Wales’s 60th birthday
The Prince of Wales, who wanly claimed he only enjoyed "bits" of his job in a BBC interview shown on Wednesday, seemed in a brighter mood at the New Wimbledon Theatre in south London last night where a host of his favourite comedy performers staged a tribute show called "We Are Not Amused" to mark his 60th birthday.
Joining Robin Williams (pictured with the Prince), Rowan Atkinson and Bill Bailey, was Andrew Sachs, who appeared on stage in his Manuel incarnation. The actor, who was the butt of lewd jokes made in prank calls by Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand last month, appeared in a short sketch alongside his former Fawlty Towers co-star John Cleese, who hosted the evening. The jokes were not new - "What is the 11th letter of the English alphabet?" asked Cleese. "Que?" replied Sachs - but they raised a smile from the Prince and his guests, who included his wife Camilla and son Prince Harry.
That was perhaps the biggest laugh of the night for Cleese, whose links, claimed the BBC's entertainment website, were a tad laboured. The former Monty Python man's recurring joke of getting the next act's name wrong - "Mr William Robins", "Billy Bail", particularly grated. However, things brightened when those two performers duetted on a song about the difficulties the Prince faced living in the shadow of the Queen. "Your momma ain't goin' anywhere, she's gonna hang on to that crown," sang Williams poignantly. Bailey concluded: "The one thing that ain't on the money is you."
