Baader-Meinhof’s Klar to be freed
As the film The Baader-Meinhof Complex continues to attract audiences and controversy in equal measure, one of the last imprisoned members of the terrorist gang, Christian Klar (inset above), is to be freed after spending more than a quarter of a century in jail.
Klar, 56, a member of the Red Army Faction (RAF), the organisation formed by militant Andreas Baader and journalist Ulrike Meinhof in 1970, has never apologised for the nine murders and 11 attempted murders for which he was convicted.
In a television interview in 2001, he was asked whether he felt any remorse. His reply suggested not. "Against the background of our struggle, that is not a concept," he said. "I respect the feelings of the other side, but I can't share them. The fact that so many lives count for nothing here in the rich countries sits too deep."
Klar, who will leave his Bavarian prison in January, is played in The Baader-Meinhof Complex by Daniel Lommatzsch, photographed with Nadja Uhl, who plays RAF member Brigitte Mohnhaupt.
