Barack Obama portraits a hit at the Basel Miami Beach art fair
Obama-mania has broken out at the Basel Miami Beach art fair. Those wandering around the stands this week are being treated to a number of takes on the President-elect, among them Kurt Kauper's circular painting at $65,000 (pictured left). The David Zwirner gallery is offering the Chinese artist Yan Pei Ming’s portrait (right) for $300,000 and a tender portrait by Marlene Dumas, constructed from torn paper, at a mere $58,000.
Meanwhile, the street artist Mr Brainwash, aka Thierry Guetta, has created a mural of Barack Obama as Superman as part of non-commercial installation sponsored by the fair's foundation.
Says The First Post’s man in Miami: "There have been a lot of people gawping at these works, but no actual sales as yet. One dealer suggested that it would be the perfect opportunity to suck up to the president if a collector brought a work and then donated it to the White House."
