Winslet and DiCaprio attend Revolutionary Road premiere
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio (pictured) attended the premiere of Revolutionary Road in Los Angeles on Monday evening. The pair, who are reunited for the first time since the 1997 blockbuster Titanic, are currently riding high, both having received Golden Globe nominations - seen by many as a dress rehearsal for the Oscars - for best actor and actress for their performances in the movie.
Also in attendance was Sam Mendes, the film's director and, of course, 33-year-old Winslet's husband. The actress admitted that shooting the love scenes in front of him had been "too weird", but said of her decision to work again with DiCaprio: "I think because we knew that Revolutionary Road was so different to Titanic that it was almost like the pressure was off. And we're so different now, you know, as people and as actors, that it was just a clean slate."
DiCaprio, who in an interview earlier this week had described Winslet as the "best actress of her generation", said: "It was a deeper experience because this is a much more hardcore, emotional piece. It's some of the most unnerving, voyeuristic dialogue that I ever read. You almost feel like you shouldn't be in these intimate conversations between these two people. You feel like you should sort of run away."
The film is based on a novel by Richard Yates written nearly half a century ago about a suburban couple in 1950s Connecticut trying bring up two children. When it was first published in 1961, it was in contention with Joseph Heller’s Catch 22 for the 1962 National Book Award, but it fell into obscurity until its republication with an introduction by Richard Ford in 1989.
While Winslet is being widely tipped for an Oscar for her role in the film, the omens do not look good. She has been nominated for seven Golden Globes and five Academy Awards in the past, but has never won any of them.
