Fashionistas fight over Wintour outfit
Possibly in a craven attempt to suck up to the most important woman in New York fashion, many have leapt to the defence of US Vogue editor Anna Wintour's dress sense. As reported here yesterday, Time magazine chose a sequined, seahorse-style Karl Lagerfeld creation Wintour (pictured) wore to the Met Costume Gala in May as the number one "worst fashion faux pas" of the year. "When the history of modern fashion is written, this will be its Waterloo moment," wrote Barbara Luscombe for the magazine.
However, fashionistas beg to differ. "We can't believe she [Luscombe] did this, because no one messes with Anna," says an editorial in the Cut, New York Magazine's fashion blog. "This dress is Chanel Haute Couture, specially designed by Karl Lagerfeld himself to fit the gala's superhero theme." Another supporter on the site, says: "AW looked Galactastic!"
Others cited in Time’s Top 10 faux pas list included Tom Cruise's wife, Katie Holmes, photographed in a white silk jumpsuit she apparently designed herself. This will no doubt concern the Milan-based fashion label, Miu Miu, who have asked her to become their ‘public face’, following predecessors Kirsten Dunst and Vanessa Paradis.
Meanwhile, Time has made a much less controversial pick for its annual Person of the Year. President-elect Barack Obama was awarded the title "for having the confidence to sketch an ambitious future in a gloomy hour” and because he showed "the competence that makes Americans hopeful he might pull it off".
