‘Heavy’ Heidi and Weinstein attend New York Fashion Week

The heavy brigade was in town for New York Fashion Week yesterday - the big-time Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and the model Heidi Klum, still smarting from being dubbed "simply too heavy" for the catwalk by Karl Lagerfeld last week.

Weinstein was attending the unveiling of his English wife Georgina Chapman's new Marchesa collection. Thirty-two-year-old Chapman (above, left), a former model who co-founded the label with Keren Craig, managed to attract a high-octane crowd, including the actress Diane Kruger, who braved an arctic night dressed in a transparent flowered skirt and no visible winter coat, and Taylor Momsen, star of the hit TV show, Gossip Girl.

But Weinstein and US Vogue editor Anna Wintour stole their thunder. "Clear a path, please," bellowed a harassed PR girl as they made their entrance. "Someone is coming through. Please clear a space."

"Suddenly, in a formerly packed room, a giant halo of calm developed around Harvey and a certain bobbed editrix, who had clearly hoped to avoid the crowds by arriving a bit past the end of the allotted hour," said New York magazine.

Meanwhile, Klum (above right), the Victoria Secret model and star of TV's Project Runway, attended Michael Kors's collection, described as "tailored, sleek and sexy urban dressing." Karl Lagerfeld said of Klum last week: "She is simply too heavy and has too big a bust. And she always grins so stupidly."

Rushing to her defence this week was Tim Gunn, creative director at Jill Claiborne and a fellow Project Runway star. "It's totally ridiculous!" he said. "If she's fat, other women should throw themselves off a train. I can wrap my hand around her bicep."
