The belles of St Trinian's came out last night, as the film's stars Tamsin Egerton (left), Amara Karan (right) and Girls Aloud strode a pink carpet for the premiere of an updated version of the 1950s classic in London's Leicester Square. The schoolgirl outfits for the film had been swapped for Dolce & Gabbana and Armani.

The original 1954 film, The Belles of St Trinian's, set at a riotous girls' school, made stars of Alastair Sim, George Cole and Joyce Grenfell. The makers of the modern version have promised an anarchic view of British public school life that will be an "antidote to Harry Potter". While the Fifties schoolgirls puffed on cigarettes, the 21st-century pupils take drugs, have sex and have tattoos and piercings.

Along with the girls, the remake features Colin Firth and Rupert Everett, who takes up the original Alastair Sim role, playing both the school headmistress and her brother. Everett says his headmistress character is partly based on Camilla Parker Bowles. The film also includes roles for model Lily Cole, Stephen Fry, Russell Brand as well as Hollywood actress Mischa Barton.
