Whole lotta love for Led Zep reunion

Robert Plant

The iconic rock band Led Zeppelin wowed fans and critics alike in a storming reunion at London's O2 Arena, their first gig in 20 years. The band played a 90-minute set to 18,000 people who now count themselves very lucky. The internet rush to buy £125 tickets to see Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and the late John Bonham's son Jason saw some 20m people crash the website with the winners being drawn by electronic lottery.

"It's been a long, lonely time since I last rock'n'rolled," screeched Plant during an encore set of Rock'n'Roll and Whole Lotta Love. The 16-song set opened with Good Times Bad Times before moving on to Ramble On and Black Dog. "Bizarre, beguiling and better than ever," was the Guardian's verdict. Reviewer Alexis Petridis gave the concert five stars, saying: "Plant sounds fantastic, and retains an utterly magnetic and startlingly lithe presence on stage".

Although the opening song was blighted with sound problems, "once the requisite valves heat up, the quality is unmistakeable," said the Times. "Page dispensed powerchords like an aged Thor lobbing down thunderbolts for kicks. It had been good before, but something of the devil seemed to get hold of them at this point." The evening's high point was the "mighty" Kashmir, said Andy Gill in the Independent.

Celebrity concert-goers included Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, Sirs Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney, Priscilla Presley and supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.
