Gates delivers his post-Microsoft vision
Microsoft founder and multi-billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, who is retiring in July at the ripe old age of 52, delivered his swansong at the world's largest technology show on Sunday with a star-studded mockumentary of his last day at Microsoft. Shown to a packed Las Vegas ballroom at the Consumer Electronics Show, the film's running joke was that Gates, who plans to retire from day-to-day operations to oversee his £18bn charitable foundation, will now have unlimited time on his hands.
The film showed the software billionaire playing with Star Wars figurines, honing his air guitar skills and then working out with personal trainer, actor Matthew McConaughey. Bored, Gates then decides to find a new career. Enter a cavalcade of celebrities trying gracefully to let Gates know that he couldn't cut it in their world. Pop star and fellow do-gooder Bono tells him that he couldn't replace the Edge in U2, while Jay-Z breaks the news to Gates that he isn't a rapper. Meanwhile Steven Spielberg turns him down for the movies and both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama turn him down as a running mate. The 3,500-strong audience, many of whom had waited in line as long as four hours for the keynote speech, reportedly loved it.
