Fabio in hot water over tax evasion
Barely installed as the new England football manager Fabio Capello is under investigation in Italy for tax evasion. The allegations, which link Capello to the Serie A Italian football scandal in 2006, concern the 61-year-old manager's time at the Juventus club. Prosecutors in Turin have been investigating Capello's earnings between 2004-2006, paying particular attention to sponsorship deals he was given at the time.
The investigation, which is being headed by Raffaele Guariniello, is connected to a wider investigation into malpractice in Italian football. Although no details about his case are yet public, police may look at his business records from as far back as the early 1990s when he was manager for AC Milan.
Adrian Bevington, a spokesman for the Football Association, told the press that the FA had spoken with Capello's advisors and been told there was nothing to worry about. However, the Italian newspaper Il Giornale newspaper claims that investigators are looking into a network of offshore holding companies set up by Capello and his sons Pierfillipo and Edoardo.
This wouldn't be the first time Capello had been in trouble for tax evasion. In 2003 he pretended to have an address in the small Swiss town of Campione d'Italia in order to avoid paying taxes. The town mayor went to jail and Capello was fined £2,800.
