Ledger death: mystery of calls to Mary-Kate
Police investigating the death of Heath Ledger have confirmed that the masseuse who found his body at his Manhattan apartment on Tuesday has changed her story. Diana Wolozin, 40, claimed she called the actress Mary-Kate Olsen twice before calling an ambulance. But when police checked phone records, they found Wolozin had telephoned Olsen three times before dialling the emegency services - spending a total of nine minutes on the calls - and had made another call to the actress later.
Olsen and Ledger met in the summer of 2006. American news sources have suggested Ledger and Olsen were dating casually for at least three months prior to Ledger’s death from a presumed overdose of prescription sleeping and anti-anxiety pills, although neither had wanted to make the relationship 'exclusive'.
There is no suggestion of wrongdoing on Olsen's part, and police have denied earlier claims that they were seeking to interview the actress. But the sequence of events shows how those employed by the stars are supposed to handle potentially explosive situations involving famous people: police say the masseuse was phoning Olsen "for guidance" before involving emergency services.
In her first call to Olsen, Wolozin screamed, "Heath is unconscious. I don't know what to do!" Olsen, who lives in Manhattan but was in California at the time, replied saying she would send her private security there to deal with the situation. Moments later, the masseuse called back to tell Olsen she was calling 911: "I think he may be dead." "I already have people coming over," said Olsen.
Meanwhile, Ledger's father, Kim, a racing driver from Perth, has arrived in New York to collect Heath's body, which is lying in New York's Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, known as the funeral home to the stars. The bodies of Judy Garland, Ed Sullivan, George Gershwin and Jackie Onassis have all been sent there. It is not yet known whether Heath Ledger will be buried in Perth or New York.
