Fur flies at Gaultier show
Fashion writers had their claws out on Wednesday for the ageing 'enfant terrible' Jean-Paul Gaultier after he showed a collection on Tuesday night stuffed with animal heads, legs, tails and feet. As the introduction to Michael Jackson's Thriller - with its laughing madman - blasted out, Gaultier sent models down the catwalk dressed almost completely in fur - from whole fox pelts to garish fur accessories.
A shocked Catherine Deneuve looked on from the front row as a fox coat with two fox heads swished back and forth on the model’s back.
"Jean-Paul Gaultier seemed to be out for blood last night," wrote the Guardian, noting that the fur accessories were "unsubtle". "If you have any doubts about fur, this show will put you off it forever," said the Wall Street Journal while Hilary Alexander of the Daily Telegraph described the show as a "savage affair".
Wednesday at Paris Fashion Week was more restrained. Highlights included Karl Lagerfeld's classic monochrome tailoring, austere yet sumptuous clothing from Givenchy and Dries van Noten's 'flower power' smock dresses and evening gowns.
