Boris and Dave fall out over migrant policy

It couldn't last. Within days of David Cameron giving his party's London Mayoral candidate Boris Johnson a very public slap on the back, the two men are now at odds over Conservative policy after Johnson called for an amnesty for immigrants who have been living illegally in London for four years or more.

Johnson, who is just ahead of the Labour's Ken Livingstone in the opinion poll published, said the capital would benefit from offering migrants a one-off pardon. It would allow immigrants to work legally, pay taxes and attend integration classes to improve their English.

But Cameron jumped on the proposal, saying it would lead to demands for further amnesties. Although he said Johnson was entitled to his own views on policy and was not bound by central party policy, the split delighted the Livingstone camp, which is banking on more blunders from Boris before polling day on May 1.

Not that they're not allowed to refer to him as 'Boris' any longer... Tessa Jowell, who as well as taking charge of the Olympics is Minister for London, has issued an edict that no one in the Labour Party must refer to the Conservative mayoral candidate simply as 'Boris' because it makes him appear too charismatic and popular. Senior Labour figures will have to put £5 in the 'swear box' every time they use his first name.
