Sugar fails to make Jewish power list
Sir Alan Sugar will be spitting tacks. For despite his appearances on the BBC show The Apprentice, and although he now has a personal fortune estimated at £800m, the growly businessman has failed to make the influential Jewish Power 100, the annual list of movers and shakers published by the Jewish Chronicle.
The tycoon, who on this week's Apprentice berated a candidate for not knowing the meaning of kosher, is said to be fiercely proud of his Jewish origins, so this is a blow. And he will not be pleased to see that even gentiles appear on the list (it honours those people deemed to be influential in shaping British Jewish life), among them Gordon Brown, who appears at number 29.
One judge, Ben Rich, explained how the list was compiled. "It's not about famous Jews. Otherwise we would have Amy Winehouse. Sir Alan is a generous philanthropist, but does not pursue a specific agenda. However, his recent comments about kosher chicken may indicate he wants to."
