Ben Foster aims to be first choice keeper at Man U
Manchester United's Carling Cup final penalty shoot-out hero Ben Foster hopes to replace Edwin van der Sar as the club's first-choice goal keeper, James Ducker writes in the Times. "On first impressions, Foster might seem too nice a guy to succeed at one of the most demanding clubs in European football, but his cheerful demeanour belies a steely determination. Plagued by injury since joining United from Stoke City for £1m in July 2005, Foster has endured too many setbacks to start making bold predictions, but having waited so long for his moment in the spotlight, he has no intention of allowing a man-of-the-match performance in a Carling Cup final - only his seventh appearance in a United shirt - to be the high point of his career at the club. With a new four-year contract in the pipeline, however, Foster - who has 16 months remaining on his existing deal - should have plenty more opportunities to shine, providing he stays fit. 'I’ve been at the club for 3½ years and, despite what has been won in that time, never had my hands on a medal until now, so this is a massive boost for me,' Foster, 25, said. 'I want to stay here. It’s the biggest club in the world. Hopefully, I’ll have a decade or more here and I want this to be the first of many more trophies to come my way.'”
