Fergie targets future silverware

In the end, the touch from Ryan Giggs beyond Wigan's keeper to make it 2-0, however apposite it was that it should come from such a staunch club servant, was unnecessary. But whatever happens to Giggs, there's more to come from his boss, Sir Alex Ferguson. "United's win gave Ferguson the 10th such bauble of his Old Trafford tenure and he hinted there might be more to come," writes Louise Taylor in the Guardian. "Insisting he was not contemplating retirement, not least because his wife, Lady Cathy, will not allow him to, he said: 'How would I be without all this, please tell me - and my wife wouldn't let me retire.'" "She kicks me out of the door at 7am every morning. She's quite a formidable person" Sir Alex Ferguson reveals his pre-eminent driving factor - his wife, Cathy

Chelsea fall at final hurdle

Maybe it was the sun, maybe it was the realisation that Moscow in ten days was now the focus of their season, maybe, maybe... "See you in Moscow, Avram Grant said to those fans who remained for the post-match lap of honour. They will see a Chelsea team for the Champions League final in Russia, but probably not the rather listless lot who played out a 1-1 draw with Bolton in the final domestic game of the season," writes Matt Dickinson in the Times. "The chance to make history should see to that. It should force Didier Drogba to concentrate on his game rather than picking a pathetic squabble with the inoffensive Gavin McCann. It should make Alex focus instead of ceding an equaliser with a sloppy clearance. It should get Joe Cole crossing to the near post rather than five yards over the bar." (Times)

Fulham secure £35m survival

Beat that Lazarus... For the second time in the last three games, Fulham spent periods of their 1-0 win over Portsmouth statistically relegated, as drop rivals Reading and Birmingham were both winning while Fulham struggled to remain on parity with Portsmouth. Then Danny Murphy's 76th- minute header ensured Premier League football at Craven Cottage for Fulham and their boss Roy Hodgson. "Ultimately, it was not Mohamed Fayed's hampers of caviar and Viagra that ensured Fulham's survival in the Premier League," writes Oliver Brown in the Daily Telegraph, "but the sobriety of manager Roy Hodgson - described by his flamboyant chairman as a 'model of humour and conscience'." Hamilton hails best-ever race

Another Ferrari win, but renewed hope for Lewis Hamilton and the embattled McLaren team, as the young British driver battled through three pit stops to snatch second place and keep Kimi Raikkonen in his sights, just seven points in front. "Hamilton took the lead on lap 24 after muscling past eventual winner Massa on the approach to turn 12, but the odds were always stacked against victory," writes Simon Arron in the Daily Telegraph. "After making his third and final stop on 45, Hamilton rejoined between the Ferraris of Massa and Raikkonen and remained there to the end. Raikkonen closed in, but Hamilton insisted he had felt no pressure." (Daily Telegraph)

"The best race I've driven. It's doesn't matter whether you win - it's a question of knowing you've extracted the most from yourself" A jubilant Lewis Hamilton celebrates his plucky second

Solid Hoggard returns for England

With the withdrawal of Andrew Flintoff due to side strain, the way was open for the old warhorse Matthew Hoggard to return to England colours in the Test squad announced yesterday for Thursday's game against New Zealand. "Flintoff, with his disappointment duly expressed, has now, by default probably, been given extra time to continue the rehabilitation of his ankle (presumed trouble-free, though one is always cautious with bulletins concerning his health; smokescreens have been put down in the past)," writes Mike Selvey in the Guardian. "Quite what he can do further without actually being able to bowl is unclear, though. Nor is there anything more than a vague renewed time frame on his return. " (Guardian)

Jones posts five-wicket haul

With Matthew Hoggard back in the team, Andrew Flintoff a couple of Tests - perhaps - away from a return, Simon Jones looks like he could be the next of England's 'fabulous four' Ashes-winning bowlers to return to national duty, scooping five wickets for 32 runs in his 10-over spell for Worcester Royals against Hampshire Hawks. "They can only be regarded as the first tentative steps on the road to his full rehabilitation but the Welsh fast bowler got through his full quota of overs yesterday and claimed a maiden five-wicket haul in one-day cricket," writes Geoffrey Dean in the Times. Thought for the Day

Fulham, at one time 1-50 for relegation, escaped thanks to three successive away victories, a feat they last achieved when Queen Victoria was a lad (I might not have that absolutely right; Setanta's commentator John Champion tends to throw more facts at you than it is possible for even a moderate drinker like me to absorb.)  Martin Kelner reflects on the last day of the season in the Guardian
