Farewell to work

A friend who seems to be quite good at being alive - she's happy, successful and rich - has informed me that the secret lies in doing only what brings you pleasure. Apparently, or at least according to the friend, if you never do anything which you don't enjoy, in a very short time you will find yourself richer, happier and better-married than you ever thought possible in your wildest dreams. And on top of that - if you're concerned about re-incarnation,

that is - doing exactly and only as you please ensures that you'll never have to come back down again.

It seems to make some sense. The thinking goes like this: if everyone lived this way, there would, have been no Credit Crunch (bankers would have been happy with their first measly bonuses and would have whiled away their days on a beach somewhere playing volleyball, spreading joy as they leapt up for another smash) and there would be no global warming (quite a lot of people
