David Ayer served in the United States Navy prior to finding work as a script doctor. He went on to become a successful writer, with credits including U-571 (2000), The Fast And The Furious (2001), Training Day (2001), Dark Blue (2002) and S.W.A.T. (2003). As a director his first feature was Harsh Times (2005). Ayer's films are often set in downtown L.A., where he grew up.
